Porter’s equalizing goal wasn’t enough to stave off Omaha in late stages
OMAHA- NEB. – Kansas City Women's Soccer (8-7-3, 3-2-2) battled hard in the regular season finale but came up just short, falling on the road to Omaha (6-8-4, 3-4-1) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. All of the game's goals came in the second half of play with the Roos and Mavericks alternating scores at various phases of the second period.
Kansas City and Omaha had sparing chances in the first half as both teams took ample time feeling each other out for the first 45 minutes of play. The Roos had one shot in the first half while the Mavericks had two. Annika Patton and KC's defense held up well and thwarted several Omaha opportunities as the freshman goalkeeper punched multiple would-be shots out of scoring contention.
Early in the second half, Omaha struck first behind a Maddie Dobberstein goal from beyond the box in the 48th minute. Kansas City fought through the adversity and worked their way into the box with numerous scoring opportunities before finally breaking through.
In the 65th minute, Olivia Platt pushed the ball up the field to Ashley Koch with lots of space on the right side of the Roos attacking third. Koch maneuvered the ball past the Omaha goalkeeper and fired a ball towards the front post which was pushed past the line by Riley Porter for the epic equalizing score.
Porter earned her fourth goal of the season and crossed the double digit point barrier by notching her way up to 11 for the year. Additionally, the goal marked Koch's seventh assist of the season and brought her up to 19 points on the year. Kansas City tied Omaha in the 65th minute behind a beautiful-looking offensive sequence capped off by Porter's goal.
Needing a win to get into the Summit League Tournament, Omaha continued to pressure Kansas City and found a late go-ahead score behind the foot of Addie LaRock to put the Mavericks up 2-1 in the 84th minute. Kansas City pushed for a couple more chances in the final moments but ultimately couldn't find another equalizing score.
