A thrilling contest was played to a draw thanks to an 84th minute equalizer from Olivia Platt
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Women's Soccer (8-6-3, 3-2-2 Summit) has used clutch late moments in the past few weeks, putting together the team's longest in-conference unbeaten streak in the last six seasons. This evening was no different - Olivia Platt played the equalizing hero in the 84th minute, sending Kansas City to a 1-1 draw with South Dakota State (9-2-6, 3-1-3 Summit).Â
In the tale of two halves, Kansas City had the advantage in the first 45. The Roos dominated the run of play, placing five shots on-goal in the first 45 and adding a pair of early shots that banged off the woodwork from Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco and Riley Porter. Kansas City was unable to find a score in the first half and the flip switched in the second frame, favoring the Jackrabbits. Kansas City's defense stood strong, held down by 90 minute shifts from Emilia Zolesio Fernandez Blanco, Ella Reyling and Kinsley Smith. Anika Patton was called into action for four big saves, but SDSU's Lauren Walter was too good in the 76th minute. Walter jumped on a pass from Mia Bosch and gave SDSU a late-game advantage, sneaking a shot by Patton.
It might have been easy to write the Roos off, as they had not attempted a single shot since the 54th minute and had not put an attempt on-frame since the 27th minute. But, all they needed was one, and one they got. Madelyn Muhr played a long ball forward, leaving Porter to battle with a pair of defenders to win the ball. She muscled her way into the box and held play up, allowing D. Zolesio and Platt to make trailing runs behind her. Zolesio took the pass and drew the attention of the entire back line, leaving Platt alone at the top of the box. Platt approached and struck with her right foot, sending the ball into the upper-left 90 and sending Roo faithful into a frenzy.
The extra point looms large with the regular season finale coming up this weekend. Kansas City currently sits in a tie for fourth place with South Dakota, both teams trailing the Jackrabbits by a singular point. Kansas City takes on sixth-place Omaha on Sunday at 1 p.m., with USD traveling to second-place Denver and SDSU traveling to first-place Oral Roberts. Depending on Sunday's results, the Roos could enter the postseason as high as the third seed or as low as the fifth seed.
