Kansas City’s stacked sprinting squad braces for more success on Friday
Kansas City Track & Field looks to further a steady 2024-25 indoor campaign as the Roos travel back to the familiar confines of the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo. for the Show-Me-Showdown on Friday. Last time out, Kansas City saw Tory Lanham and Jaleesa McWashington deliver tremendous performances that led to them earning Summit League 'Peak Performer of the Week' honors.Â
In the 200 meter dash, Lanham took the tape with a time of 21.01 seconds at last weekend's Alexis Jarrett Invitational, setting a new school record and giving him a top five men's indoor 200m time across the country this season. McWashington starred in the women's long jump, recording a jump of 5.66 meters, good for third best in the event and tied for the sixth best mark in the Summit League this season.Â
ROOS TO WATCHÂ
- Jayden Henry - Only a true freshman, Henry has excelled with second place finishes in the two events he's competed in this season. The first was the 400 meter dash, where Henry took the tape 47.71 seconds, setting a new Kansas City program record. Additionally, Henry clocked in at 8.23 in the 60 meter hurdles this past weekend at the Alexis Jarrett Invitational. Henry looks poised to grow into another star sprinter for the Roos and will be a headline runner in the hurdles and relay races on Friday.Â
- Stephen Brown - Although Brown started the season running unattached, he's been a remarkable runner for the Roos since joining the team on the track officially. Brown set a Kansas City school record in the 200 meter dash for all but three minutes, as he ran a 21.50 in the heat before Lanham's school record 21.01 time. Brown also ran a 6.72 time in the 60 meter dash at the Bob Timmons Challenge earlier this season, though the time doesn't go in the KC record books since Brown ran unattached for that meet.Â
- Nahshon Houston - Versatility is the name of Houston's game. The veteran jumper and sprinter has been the leader of the pack for the Roos in the men's field events. Houston's best long jump mark this season is a 7.19m jump in Lawrence during the indoor season's first meet. Houston is also making his presence felt in the 60 meter dash, totaling times of 7.05 at the Bob Timmons Challenge and 7.11 at the ISU Holiday Invitational.Â
- Jayden Lightford - Leading the way among Roo sprinters on the women's side, Lightford has excelled on the track so far this season. Last time out, Lightford ran in the 60 meter dash, where she finished with a time of 7.94, good for a top 10 placement in the event. Additionally, Lightford totaled a time of 25.40 in the women's 200 meter dash which placed her top five in the event.Â
- Maddie Dial - Dial has run in four different track events for the Roos this season, including the 60m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay. Dial boasts a 26.17 time in the 200 meter dash, good for ninth best in the competition in Columbia. At Iowa State, Dial ran a 58.72 time in the 400 meter dash, good for seventh best in the event. Finally, to start the year, Dial ran a 8.14 second time in the 60 meter dash at the Bob Timmons Challenge.Â
- Maggie Boley - Crossing over from cross country, Boley will be running in the 3000 meter race at the Show-Me-Showdown. Boley was the Roos most consistent runner on the women's side this past cross country season as her best race came in Columbia where she ran a 23:21.3 time in the Gans Creek Classic. Boley also ran a 20:16.40 in the 5k race at the Bob Timmons Classic, which placed her inside the top 25 finishers.Â
Following the Show-Me-Showdown, Kansas City will head back to Columbia for a third straight weekend to compete in the Bob Teel Invitational next Saturday.
