The Roos fell on a walk-off in the first game and were run ruled in the second
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In a pair of games that were played at Urban Youth Academy, but were played as road games for the Roos, Kansas City Softball (5-29, 0-5 Summit) dropped both to South Dakota (15-15, 4-0 Summit). The Roos battled late in the first game of the day behind a strong game at the plate from Sydney Nichols, but were walked-off in the bottom of the seventh, 5-3. The second game slipped away from KC in the bottom of the third inning and South Dakota won in a run-rule victory, 10-2.
KEY MOMENTS | GAME ONE
- Top 2 / 0-1 | The Coyotes got on the board in the bottom of the first, and Marina Karnes singled up the middle to start the second. She was advanced to third on another single from Taylor Kvale, but Kansas City was unable to get a run across. USD added another run in the bottom of the inning.
- Top 4 / 1-2 | Nichols started the inning with a single, then Lexy Smith reached on an error and Katherine Karnatz and Kvale drew back-to-back walks, bringing the Roos' first run across. South Dakota added one more in the bottom of the inning.
- Top 5 / 2-3 | The Roos got a two-out rally going, sparked by another single from Nichols. Karnes and Smith followed with two more hits, bringing Nichols across for the second time in as many innings.
- Top 7 / 3-3 | Katie Noble singled to right to begin the final inning, and Nichols tallied another hit, putting two runners on with no outs. Karnes advanced the runners on a groundout, and an error allowed Smith to reach first and load the bases. Karnatz sent a fly ball to center field, getting enough distance for the tying run to score. The Coyotes used a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory.
KEY MOMENTS | GAME TWO
- Bottom 2 / 0-1 | South Dakota scored in the first inning to take a lead, but Camryn Stickel got back on the right track in the second by retiring all three batters, including a looking strike out.
- Top 3 / 1-1 | A double by Fitzgerald and a drawn walk by Ally Vonfeldt set up a scoring opportunity for the Roos. An error at third base on a Noble at-bat allowed Fitzgerald to come around and tie the game up. The Coyotes put up five runs in the bottom of the inning and claimed control of the game.
- Top 5 / 2-10 | With Kansas City facing a run rule, Fitzgerald started the inning with a single. She was brought around on an RBI by Nichols, but it was not enough to extend the game.
STATS TO NOTE
- The Roos first run in the fourth inning of game one marked the first run to come across for KC in the span of 26 innings. Kansas City's three runs scored in that game was the most since scoring 10 at Northern Colorado on Mar. 11.
- Nichols's three-hit, two-run showing in the first game of the day tied season and career-highs in both categories. Her three hits was also tied for the best single-game showing by a Roo this year.
- The second game of the day marked the seventh time this season that Kansas City has played in a run-rule shortened game.
- Fitzgerald went 2-of-3 at the plate with a double in the second game, her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
