The Roos’ defense limited WIU to just three shots on goal for their second-straight shutout
MACOMB, Ill. – Kansas City remained unbeaten in Summit League play, coming away with a 0-0 tie against Western Illinois Saturday at John McKenzie Alumni Field. The Roos, playing a man up for the final 30 minutes of play, peppered the Western Illinois goal for 18 shots but came away empty at the end while registering their second straight shutout.
Christian Koffi, who ranks second in Summit play in shots, got off seven against Western Illinois and his latest with at the 87th minute from point blank range was stopped by goalie Alex Flowers. That attack and shot followed a great scoring opportunity by Western Illinois when Cooper Clark stopped a point-blank shot by Gabe Chapa at the 86th minute mark. Clark finished the game with 3 saves and he came out of the box several times to stop a potential Western Illinois threat.
"I thought we were very solid defensively and were able to get possession in the areas we thought would be dangerous," said Kansas City head coach Ryan Pore. "We lacked the final product today and that was the difference. I'm proud of the -guys for getting another road conference result and we are looking forward to getting back home after a long road trip."
Most of Kansas City's scoring chances came after WIU defender Marco Presta was issued a red card for tackling a Kansas player on a breakaway attack at the 60-minute mark. The Roos had 10 shots and two on goal in the last 30 minutes.
Kansas City (4-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 in the Summit) dominated the first half, but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes. The Roos rattled off seven shots in the opening to just two for Western Illinois. Leatherneck goalkeeper Alex Flowers made two saves in front of his goal, one from Kazuki Kimura at the 8:16 mark and the second from Philipp Basara at 24:20. Kansas City goalie Clark faced two shots on goal but was never seriously threatened.
