Roos split double-header with KU, earning their third win over a Big XII Conference team this season
The Roos will travel back to Lawrence tomorrow for the third game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Arrocha Ballpark at Rock Chalk Park. Kansas City will look to win the series and get their fourth victory over the University of Kansas in program history.
Game No. 1 Kansas City 6, Kansas 11
A pair of Jayhawk homeruns in the first inning gave Kansas the early lead. Kansas City stepped up to the challenge of being down and came back swinging. Alexis D'Ambrosio was the first to cross the plate after reaching on a fielder's choice. Faith Willis scored the first hit for KC and Sydney McQuinn walked to load the bases. Delainey Fenoglio took advantage of her designated player position and smoked one to right field to bring in the first run. The next KC run came on a wild pitch when Faith Willis slid into home to bring the game within one. Then Katherine Karnatz drilled a sac fly to right field to bring in McQuinn and tie the game.
"KU's hitters came out hot and stayed hot the entire game, but we showed some fight coming back from down three runs twice," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said. "We just couldn't hold them down."
In an offensive charged game, KU jumped back on top with a three-run lead after three innings. In the top of the fourth, Delainey Fenoglio tied the game again with a three-run blast that scored Willis and McQuinn.
Mia Hoveland started the game in the circle and kept KC within striking distance through three innings. Hayley Patterson entered on the mound in the bottom of the fourth and kept the game 6-6 until the final out of the fifth inning. The Jayhawks reciprocated with a three-run homerun of their own and commanded the lead until the end. Lia Lombardini finished the game pitching her first inning of the season and threw her first strikeout in the 6-11 final.
"It was good to see Delainey have a good game at the plate," Shaw said. "We are more dangerous when she's doing well."
Fenoglio was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the game. Willis ended with two hits and two runs scored. McQuinn also had a perfect on base percentage, drawing three free bases on walks and scoring two runs for the Roos.
Game No. 2 Kansas City 8, Kansas 6
The second game of the night started as a pitchers' battle. Kansas City grabbed the early edge and fought all the way through to earn the tally in the win column. Kansas City got the first hit of the game off the bat of Kloe Hilbrenner. She started the game with a double and stole third but was left stranded.
After the first two innings, the game remained scoreless until the Roos went on a mid-game run. Marina Karnes led off the third with her first hit of the season, then Karnatz reached on a fielder's choice. She later scored on another Hilbrenner double to the left field wall to give the Roos the 1-0 lead headed into the fourth.
Kansas City added two more in the fourth inning. Lombardini started off the inning with her 21st walk of the season and third of the day. She later advanced to third on a hit by Willis and scored on a sac fly by Fenoglio. The Roos' third run of the day came from a single by McQuinn that brought Willis home.
"We jumped out early on offense and Cam held them hitless through the first three innings," Shaw said.
A two-run homerun and two-out rally by the Jayhawks gave the opposition the 4-3 lead entering the fifth inning. Kansas City came back and tied it up in the top of the sixth after Maggie Klover and Karnatz hit back-to-back base knocks to score Macy Hornosky. Hornosky had come into pinch run for Faith Denning who started the two-out rally with a walk.
"I was proud of the way our hitters answered the challenge tying the game in the sixth and taking the four-run lead in the seventh," Shaw said.
The battle came down to the final inning, where the Roos' grit prevailed once again. Hilbrenner stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh and started the rally with a single and reached second on a defensive miscue in right field. Ally Vonfeldt came in clutch with a double, swapping places with Hilbrenner and giving the Roos the lead once again. The momentum continued to build as Lombardini drew yet another walk and Willis laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Fenoglio drove in Vonfeldt on another sac fly to centerfield and McQuinn brought in Lombardini to extend their lead to three. Kansas City wasn't done yet, Faith Denning put the icing on top with a single that scored McQuinn. The Jayhawks would muster a two-run homerun in the bottom of the frame, but Roos' pitcher Camryn Stickel would hang on to the 8-6 victory.
"Cam battled and held off KU's two, three, and four-hole hitters in the final inning," Shaw said. "I'm really proud of the way Cam pitched against a good hitting team."
Stickel threw the complete game, only giving up six hits to the hot bats of the Jayhawks. This marks the freshman's second win over a power five conference team and her ninth win of the season.
