Kansas City Falls to Long Ball in Series Finale at Kansas

The Roos saw Kansas' starting pitcher Hailey Reed in the closing innings of both games in Friday's double-header. They used the familiar pitching to their advantage and jumped in the lead early. Katherine Karnatz quickly timed the first pitch and hit a double to the right-center gap. Kloe Hilbrenner followed with a single to right that brought home Karnatz and gave Kansas City their first lead of the game.
In a back-and-forth game, the Jayhawks were quick to respond and tie up the game in the bottom of the first. The bats were quiet in the second and third innings for both teams, but Faith Willis took back the lead with one swing of the bat in the fourth. She hit her second homerun of the season just beyond the centerfielders glove while recording her fourth hit of the weekend.
Once again, KU answered back with a solo shot of their own, as well as a couple of hits to grab the 4-2 lead at the halfway point. Kansas City came back swinging in the fifth as Hilbrenner lead off with her third double of the weekend. She came home on a sac fly by Lia Lombardini and cut the Roos' deficit to one. The inning was halted by a highlight reel dive by the Jayhawk's centerfielder that stopped what would have been extra bases hit by Delainey Fenoglio and the run-tying RBI.
Kansas broke out in the bottom of the sixth to put Kansas City in a hole it couldn't quite climb out of. The Jayhawk's hit a three-run homerun and finished out the top of the seventh cleanly in the 3-7 final. Mia Hoveland started the game on the rubber and Hayley Patterson came in to finish the final out of the sixth after the homerun.
