Vonfeldt hits two homeruns in game three and leads The Summit League in homeruns
Kansas City, MO – Kansas City Softball (17-13, 2-6) couldn't get any calls to go their way in the second day of the North Dakota State (9-19, 4-4) series. The Roos dropped the last two games of the series to finish the weekend with a conference split.
Kansas City will have a bye week from conference play but will take on two strong non-conference opponents. They will first face SEMO on Wednesday, April 7th at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. back home at the Urban Youth Academy. And then the Roos will travel across the state line to the University of Kansas for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
Game No. 1- Kansas City 3, NDSU 6
In the third game of the series, a last inning grand slam by the Bison stole the game away from the Roos. There were two outs with bases loaded in the final frame and NDSU's Wysong ripped one high and down the line. The ball was close to being foul but unfortunately for KC was called fair after a moment of hesitation.
The Roos wasted no time in the first inning. Kloe Hilbrenner was off to the races on the bases and Ally Vonfeldt followed with her tenth blast of the season to take the 2-0 early lead. It was a mammoth homerun to her sweet spot in left-center field.
NDSU got one back in the top of third to cut their deficit in half on a Bison leadoff double that later came around to score.
Kansas City faced a tough NDSU pitcher in Vargas who held KC to only four hits, but Vonfeldt seemed to have her number. She had the Roos' first two hits on two solo shots over the fence in her first two at- bats of the game. Vonfeldt carried KC into the seventh inning with the 3-2 lead before the heart-breaking grand slam busted it open. Her second homerun of the day brought her to the top of the leaderboard in homeruns hit in The Summit League with 11 on the season.
Mia Hoveland battled through another game against a great hitting team but was one out away from securing another win. Hayley Patterson came in after the grand slam to get the Roos out of it and send them to the plate for their final at-bats. Kansas City couldn't pull together a rally and the score ended 3-6 in NDSU's favor.
Game No. 2- Kansas City 2, NDSU 4
North Dakota State carried their momentum into game two of the day and scored first. Their one run in the top of the first came off a sacrifice fly. Lia Lombardini quickly grabbed back the lead with a two RBI double that scored Hilbrenner and Vonfeldt to jump back on top at the end of the first.
What started as an offensive charged game became a pitchers' duel until errors plagued the Roos in the fourth and gave NDSU the two-run lead. Those three unearned runs would be all NDSU needed to pull away with the 4-2 victory.
Camryn Stickel did everything she could to keep Kansas City within striking distance. Stickel's only earned run came in the first inning. She continued to shut down the Bison rallies, including four strikeouts in the series finale.
Alexis D'Ambrosio notched two hits in the DP position and Hilbrenner added two singles of her own in the game. They both led the team with five hits each in the weekend series.
