Preview: Men's Basketball Faces Iowa State in Ames

Kansas City Opening Tip
• After a successful 5-4 month of November, the Kansas City men's basketball (5-4) team visits Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. from Ames, Iowa.
• The teams are matching up for the first time since Dec. 9, 2014 when the Cyclones won by a 73-56 score. Iowa State leads the all-time series by a 3-0 count in the KC Division I era.
• After a nine-game month of November, the Roos play just five games in December. The lone home game during the Holiday month is on Dec. 17 against Toledo.
• The Roos come into Hilton Coliseum Wednesday seeking to snap a 10-game Iowa State home win streak against non-conference opponents.
• Iowa State is one of three Big 12 opponents the Roos will match-up with this year. The Roos lost at Oklahoma State on Nov. 9 and will face second-ranked Kansas (Dec. 14) at the Sprint Center.
The Starting Five
1. Senior graduate transfer Javan White returns back to his hometown of Ames, Iowa on Wednesday. He averaged a double-double at Ames High School as a senior and left his prep career setting the school record with 127 blocks. That record previously was held by former North Carolina Tar Heel and NBA star Harrison Barnes.
2. With five wins prior to Dec. 1, the Roos collected the most victories before the calendar flipped into December since the 2016-17 program went 6-2. That year was the last time Kansas City had a winning record at 18-17 overall.
3. After its win over Western Illinois on Saturday, Kansas City holds first-place in the WAC standings thus far in the non-conference portion. The Roos are the only league team with an above-.500 record heading into Tuesday.
4. By gaining its fifth win in its ninth overall game last Saturday, Kansas City is seeing early success it has not accomplished recently. Kansas City notched win No. 5 in its 14th game last year and win No. 5 in its 16th game in 2017-18.
5. The Roos are looking to do something that hasn't been done in nearly 16 years... defeat a Big 12 program. The last Kansas City win was against Kansas State on Dec. 30, 2003 in the 93-52 blow-out played at downtown KC's Municipal Auditorium. The Roos entered the game with a 3-6 record while K-State was 7-1 prior to the loss.

• Kansas City is No. 1 in the conference in six different statistical categories: assists (14.3), scoring margin (9.0), steals (9.4), total assists (129), total steals (85) and win-lost percentage (.556). The Roos have nearly doubled the opponents total in the steals column (85-49) and is +34 in assists (129-95).
4-1 Stretch
• The Roos have won four of their last five games to stand 5-4 overall. During the 4-1 stretch, Kansas City has impressed in many ways. Here are just a few: +9.4 rebounding margin, 47.2 percent shooting, 13.8 assists per game, 8.6 steals and a 14.6 scoring margin.

• There are a few statistical trends that equates to success for Kansas City. When the Roos do the following, they have a perfect record this year:

The Roos led 39-27 at halftime and by as many as 18 in the first 20 minutes. But the hosts had to survive at the end to move to 3-0 at home this year.
• Senior forward Javan White came away with his third double-double in his last five games after a 12-point, 13-rebound effort. He also added five assists. Junior guard Marvin Nesbitt Jr., chipped in 12 points and five boards for the Roos.
• With a plus-nine (38-29) advantage in rebounding, Kansas City now stands 4-0 when out-rebounding the opponent.
The Do-It-All Machine
