AMES, Iowa - Kansas City Men's Basketball (5-5) held tough against Iowa State (5-3) for about 35 minutes, but the Cyclones pulled away late for a 79-61 victory tonight at Hilton Coliseum in non-conference play. Kansas City's Javan White converted a three-point play to bring the score to 57-54 in favor of Iowa State with 6:37 remaining. However, the Cyclones finished the game on a 22-7 scoring run to win their 11th-straight home game against non-conference opponents.
The Roos were able to get inside against Iowa State, driving to the basket and attacking as they scored 40 points in the paint. Junior Marvin Nesbitt Jr. utilized his strength in the lane with a team-high 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Rob Whitfield added 10 points.
"I'm very disappointed in how we finished the game," said head coach Billy Donlon. "Credit to Iowa State... their guys made winning plays on both ends. We need to continue to work on taking care of the ball. There were too many turnovers for touchdowns."
Iowa State led in the early going, but only by a 14-8 gap. The Roos countered with a 16-6 spurt capped by a three-pointer from the hand of Whitfield. At that point, Kansas City led 24-20 at the 6:58 mark of the first half.
From there, the Kansas City offense cooled off going without a point for three-and-a-half minutes. White's basket stopped the scoring drought with his Roos down 31-26.
The hosts went into the locker room up 37-31, thanks in large part to 53.6 percent shooting from the field.
Iowa State's George Conditt, who was one of four Cyclones in double-figures, cushioned the lead to 45-33 with his jumper at the 15:17 mark of the second half. But the Roos, seeking their first win against a Big 12 opponents in 16 years, got balanced scoring and tough defense in the next nine minutes to fight back.
Senior Jahshire Hardnett started the comeback with a basket and a 3-pointer as the Roos chipped the deficit down to four at 57-53. But Iowa State nailed 18-of-19 from the charity stripe in the second half to hold on.
Iowa State was effective at the free throw line overall going 22-for-26 (.846), compared to 7-of-10 (.700) for the Roos.
Rasir Bolton was one of three Iowa State players with 19 points, with his scoring all coming in the second half. He also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Kansas City next plays at McNeese State on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
