SEATTLE -- Kansas City Women's Soccer (13-4-4) put up a valiant effort, but eventually had its season come to an end in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) semifinals after falling 3-1 to No. 2-seed Utah Valley tonight at Championship Field. The Roos, seeded third in the tournament, was competing in it's seventh-straight semifinal round and playing in their second game in three days. Utah Valley earned a bye in the quarterfinal round and was rested since last Saturday.
"We had a phenomenal year going 13-4-4 but we wanted that WAC championship especially for those seven seniors," said head coach Chris Cissell. " I just want to thank the seven senior for everything that they have meant to the program and to the soccer family on and off the field. I'm extremely proud of our team and for the way we played and competed all season long!"
WAC Freshman of the Year Lindsey Prokop got the scoring started again for Kansas City. She advanced the ball through a defender on the left endline and from there, her toughness was no match for the Utah Valley defense. She kept possession gaining a clear shot from 15 yards out on the side and her ball went in the top left shelf. In the 28th minute, Kansas City led 1-0.
But from there, it was all Utah Valley on the scoreboard. Katie Haskins posted the equalizer about five minutes after Prokop's goal. Her marker was assisted by Heather Stainbrook. The Wolverines were not done in the first half, getting a 2-1 lead courtesy of Jocelyn Bybee.
Amber Tripp put the game out of reach in the 81st minute and Utah Valley advances to the WAC Championship against top seed Seattle U on Sunday.
This was an extremely tight match through the first 45 minutes as this game was the fifth semifinal meeting between the two schools in the last seven years. Kansas City had won three-of the-first-four games before tonight.
Utah Valley held a shot advantage (13-8).
The Roos bid farewell to seven unbelievable seniors tonight and a group that finished with 49 wins in a four-year span.
