Harrington Earns First Team Honors for Second Straight Year; Schomers Named Setter of the Year
OREM, Utah - Following a regular season in which the Kansas City volleyball team compiled a 16-10 record, including 12-4 in Western Athletic Conference play, four Roos have been recognized by the WAC for their outstanding performance.
Alicia Harrington | Senior | Outside Hitter | First Team
For the second year in a row, Alicia Harrington was named to the All-WAC First Team. She has capped off her historic career with a great senior season, ranking second in the WAC with 3.66 kills per set. She also digs up 2.5 attacks per set, and leads Kansas City with 11 double-doubles on the year. In the Roos' Nov. 4 match against California Baptist, she matched her career-high by putting home 24 kills on .308 hitting. Harrington is currently ranked third in Kansas City program history in total kills, and is just five kills away from overtaking the second spot.
Alli Schomers | Junior | Setter | Setter of the Year/Second Team
After beginning the year in a two-setter system, Kansas City Head Coach Christi Posey decided to make the full-time switch to the 5-1 in the team's sixth match of the year against Austin Peay. Schomers started well, posting 48 assists against the Governors, and has hardly slowed down from there, throwing out 30 or more assists in the Roos' last 19 matches of the regular season. She averages over 10 assists per set, ranking first in the WAC and 65th in Division I. Schomers has hardly been limited to the passing game, flexing her ability with 68 kills, 13 aces, 130 digs and 30 blocks on the season.
Ty Lukes | Redshirt Senior | Middle Hitter | Second Team
Ty Lukes followed up her historic 2018 season with a solid 2019 campaign. She is the fifth-best hitter in the WAC in terms of hitting percentage (.339), earning a spot on the All-WAC Second Team. She posted a .611 hitting percentage in Kansas City's third win of the season over Valparaiso after connecting for six kills on her first six attacks. Her current career hitting percentage of .387 would rank first in program history, far ahead of the second-best .319.
Melanie Brecka | Sophomore | Right Side | Second Team
Melanie Brecka has found her stride at the end of the season, eclipsing the double-digit kill mark in eight of the Roos' last nine regular season matches. For the second year in a row, she was given a spot on the All-WAC Second Team, after averaging a WAC sixth-best 3.22 kills per set. Brecka matched her career-high on Nov. 7 against Utah Valley, sending across 20 kills for the third time in her career. She also made her presence felt in the serve throughout the season, finishing with two separate three-ace matches. She finished the regular season with three double-doubles, including a 13 kill, 20 dig match against South Dakota State.
Kansas City will open postseason play against Seattle U tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in Orem.
