KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Men's Basketball (2-3) team snapped a three-game skid with a 111—38 victory over Bacone College (Okla.) tonight at the Swinney Center. The 73-point margin of victory set a new school record. Senior Javan White had 24 points and 15 rebounds and freshman Josiah Allick collected 12 points and career-high 10 boards.
The Roos needed the confidence of a blow-out win after facing three-straight road opponents, including a Big 12 team and the defending regular-season Missouri Valley Conference champion. Tonight, they faced a team that was giving up 102 points a game.
"We did what we were supposed to do tonight," said head coach Billy Donlon. "We beat them like we were supposed to... after coming off three difficult road games in a row, we needed to get healthy and improve. We have done a good job of taking care of the ball in Division I games and forcing turnovers, but we are losing the battle on the glass. But we are not shooting very well. We have to shoot the ball better to have a chance to win and I think we will do that moving forward."
Kansas City utilized its height and quickness to overtake the Warriors (0-7) early and often.
By the time Bacone hit double-digits in points at the 7:48 mark, Kansas City already lit up the scoreboard for 31. Leading the way individually during that first part was White, senior Rob Whitfield and freshman Maks Klanjscek with six each.
The Roos stretched out the lead to 33 in the first half and went into the locker room up 52-20. At that point, the Roos shot 60 percent and six players had at least five points.
Kansas City didn't let off the gas in the first part of the second half. White keyed a seven-minute stretch in which the Roos got ahead by 50 points. His lay-up ignited a 23-4 run in the first part of the second half. His size and inside muscle was too much for Bacone defenders as he had numerous monster dunks.
The size never shrank below 50 points the rest of the way as all 12 Roos scored tonight. In addition to White and Allick's scoring efforts, four other Kansas City players had at least 10 points. Redshirt-junior Brandon Suggs netted a career-high 12 points, Whitfield and junior Marvin Nesbitt Jr. each had 11 and sophomore Franck Kamgain posted 10.
Senior Jahshire Hardnett saw the floor well with a collegiate career-high 10 assists and three steals.
As a team, Kansas City held a 64-23 rebounding edge. The hosts shot 57.1 percent overall.
Christian Brown and Cratezz Graves each finished with 10 points to lead the way for Bacone. The Warriors hit just 24.6 percent of their shots and turned the ball over 24 times.
Kansas City next plays Friday at 4 p.m. CST against George Washington at The Islands of Bahamas Showcase. The Roos will play three games in three days at the Showcase.
