BAHAMAS, Nassau – The Kansas City Men's Basketball (3-3) team used a 25-10 run in the final stretch to overtake George Washington (1-4) and post a 74-68 victory tonight at The Island of the Bahamas Showcase. The game is the first of a three-game effort at the Classic for the Roos. Kansas City next plays tomorrow at 7 p.m. CT against East Carolina in the winners' bracket. The Pirates defeated Evansville in the last game of the first round.
The scoring spree at the end was triggered by great defense which turned into fast-break baskets and Kansas City led 68-61 with 29 seconds left. The Roos were 8-of-8 at the free throw line in the game's final minute to hold off George Washington.
"I'm proud of our effort, had a hard time finishing plays in the first half," said head coach Billy Donlon. "Give credit to George Washington, our defense forced turnovers and created offense and our players played with a winning competitive spirit. Jahshire made veteran point guard plays and we will need that moving forward."
Senior guard Jahshire Hardnett poured in 25 points, one better than his previous collegiate career-high, done when he was with BYU. He came into the game with an average of 4.4 points per game in his first five games.
The game didn't fare well early for Kansas City. A Javan White bucket at the 17:02 mark put the score at 5-4 in favor of George Washington. However, over the next nearly-seven minutes, the Roos missed their next seven shots and fell behind 19-4. The Patriots still held a 15-point edge at 25-10 before Kansas City chipped away.
Hardnett willed his way to the tune of seven points during a 13-5 spurt that brought the Roos back to a 30-23 score at the half.
Down eight at 55-47 with 6:33 remaining, Hardnett and junior Marvin Nesbitt Jr., traded points to bring the Roos to a 55-55 tie. From that point on, the Roos never trailed in the game's final four-plus minutes.
George Washington's Jamison Battle nailed a trey at the 2:40 mark to cut the Kansas City lead to one at 62-61. But consecutive lay-ups by senior Jordan Giles and junior Brandon McKissic capped by a pair of free throws by Hardnett extended the lead to seven at 68-61.
The superb free-throw shooting by the Roos was the difference in the end.
Hardnett had the 25 points on 6-of-14 shooting. He added five rebounds in 32 minutes. Nesbitt Jr., chipped in 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Giles added 10 points and five boards. McKissic finished with nine points and a team-high five assists.
Armel Potter led George Washington with 19 points and six assists.
