Four Roos Reach Double-Digit Mark in Kills
For the Kansas City Roos volleyball team, diversity is key. The Roos entered tonight's match against CSU Bakersfield with a 7-2 record when three players reached the double-digit mark in kills, so spreading the offense is fundamental. This showed against the Roadrunners, as four Roos surpassed 10 kills, and Kansas City ran by CSU Bakersfield, 3-1 (27-29, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19).
Kansas City seemed to be targeting their middles from the jump, and it worked to their advantage. The Roos start two middle hitters, Ty Lukes and Mykal Sadler, and each had big games tonight. Sadler threw down 10 kills, finding success largely when she slid off of the middle to the right side. Lukes was big on offense and defense, dropping 14 kills and leading the team with eight total blocks, a season high.Â
"Our middles have great trust in (setter) Alli (Schomers) and they continue to add more to their offensive repertoire," Head Coach Christi Posey said.
Alicia Harrington continued to pile on to her momentous season, logging her seventh double-double of the year. She led the team with 19 kills on .295 hitting, adding 13 digs. Her two-way play has been huge for the Roos as she leads the offense and adds stability in the back row defense.
"Alicia was tough again tonight," Posey said. "She is such a gifted athlete and has such respect from her teammates for the load she carries."
Kansas City had great distribution of attacks, which can be credited to Schomers. Her play continues to propel the Roos, as she finished with 52 assists, her fourth match with over 50 assists on the year. She added a season-high 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the year, and reiterated that she can be a threat in the attack as well, with four kills.
"It's gratifying to see Alli's development. She's playing pretty well now, but I still feel like her best volleyball is ahead of her," Posey said. "She's so poised and continues to emerge as a forceful leader."
The Roos improve to 5-1 in true road games this season, having won five in a row after falling at Missouri early in the season. This streak will be put to the test against on Saturday, as they travel to Grand Canyon in a battle for second place in the WAC. The winner of that match will take an advantage over the other for the second spot, with the regular season quickly approaching a close.
