LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Kansas City Women's Soccer (10-3-4, 2-2-2 WAC) treated this afternoon's game against New Mexico State (3-12-2, 2-5-0 WAC) like the team was playing for their postseason fate. The Roos showed their fans they have resiliency as visiting Kansas City got a pair of goals in the first 26 minutes and posted a 2-0 victory against the Aggies at the Soccer Athletic Complex. The win pushed the Roos unbeaten streak to eight-straight games in the overall series with New Mexico State (7-0-1).
"I am very proud of the team to be able to go on the road and get a shutout win," said head coach Chris Cissell, who now stands with 99 career wins as a Roo in his ninth year. "We brought 18 family members on the soccer business trip and everyone contributed to our victory. We play a very good California Baptist team on Sunday and we will be focused on rest and recovery prior to our final home match of the year."
What turned out to be an unexpected start to the conference season through four games -- with two ties and two losses -- the Roos needed to bounce back and get a total team effort. Today, they did just that. Sophomore Amanda Sampson received a pass from freshman Lindsey Prokop and found a hole in the defense to stake Kansas City to an early 1-0 edge in the 15th minute. Known for her passing and assisting her offensive-minded teammates, Sampson's goal was her first on the year.
In the 26th minute, Prokop was again part of the scoring surge for the Roos. She fired a shot past goalkeeper Dmitri Fong for her fourth goal of the year, but first in nine matches. The Omaha, Neb., native has been recovering from an ankle injury that sidelined her for two games in mid-September, but her play today and recently has proven the speedster is back.
In goal, senior Erin Roth compiled her sixth shutout with four saves.
The win puts the Roos with eight points in the conference standings, which is good for fifth overall. Heading into today's match, they were in eighth-place. The top six teams qualify for the postseason conference tournament.
