BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Kansas City (8-3-4, 0-2-2) could not overcome a 2-0 hole and eventually lost a 4-1 decision at CSU Bakersfield tonight in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play. Rylan Childers gave the Roos hope in the second half with her conference-leading ninth goal of the year in the 50th minute. But, a hat trick by the Roadrunners' Jordan Martinez was more than enough offense for the hosts.
"We do not play until Sunday so we will have a very important week of training to try to get this turned around," said head coach Chris Cissell. "We need to find a way to get us going back in the positive direction that we started the season in."
The Roos offense failed to put much pressure on the CSU Bakersfield defense in the first half, putting up just three shots. Meanwhile, Martinez posted a goal in the 12th minute to put the Roos in a first-half hole for the second-straight game.
The Roadrunners led 1-0 at the half.
With just 1:40 gone by the second half, Martinez earned her second goal and the hosts seemingly put the game out of control.
However, the league's most prolific scorer this year, Childers took advantage of a CSU Bakersfield miscue. With offensive pressure in the Roadrunner box, the ball was never cleared effectively and the ball squirted out to Childers in the right side of the box. She sent a low burner into the left-hand corner past goalkeeper Andrea Neves.
Kansas City's attack was held at bay from there on out.
In the 74th minute, Chelsee Duran gave the Roadrunners some breathing room with her score to put her squad up 3-1. Martinez's third goal in the 82nd minute put the game out of reach.
