OMAHA, Neb. – UMKC volleyball opened the Omaha Classic at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska in style, posting a 3-0 victory over Abilene Christian on Friday afternoon.
The 'Roos (3-2) started off hot, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. UMKC finished off Abilene Christian (0-5) quickly with a 25-13 showing in set one.
Abilene Christian didn't go down as easily in set two, going punch-for-punch with the 'Roos throughout the set, and even holding a lead at 17-15, but UMKC powered through, regaining their composure to pull back in front, and scored three-straight points to win the set 25-22.
It was more of the same in set three, with the Wildcats hanging around with UMKC the majority of the time, but the 'Roos were able to answer any ACU rallies with outbursts of their own, and again finished off the opposition 25-22 to sweep the match, their third victory in three sets this season.
Senior Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) led UMKC with 10 kills, hitting .529, while junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa) and freshmen Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) chipped in for eight kills apiece. Sadler led all 'Roos with an astounding .667 hitting percentage on 12 total attempts, also contributing a team-high four blocks (three assists, one solo).
Senior Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa) racked up 33 assists and eight digs, while Adasia Bromberger (Omaha, Neb.) and Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) paced UMKC's defensive efforts with 11 digs each.
UMKC has a quick turnaround, playing Drake tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT to continue the Omaha Classic, before wrapping up the weekend against tournament host Omaha at 6 p.m.
