KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a game that saw a packed house inside of Durwood Stadium, UMKC fell to the Kansas Jayhawks (5-2-1), 3-0 on its home field Sunday night. The 764 fans that attended the match became a new women's soccer attendance record.
The 'Roos (1-4-2) began the game with a slow start, as the Jayhawks struck first and scored in the third minute of play. Coming out of the locker room down 2-0 at halftime, UMKC walked out of the clubhouse with a newfound energy, and to outshoot KU, 4-3, midway through the second period.
“We came out in the second half with lots of energy,” UMKC head coach Chris Cissell said. “I was really proud of how our girls never gave up and kept fighting the entire game.”
Offensively, Kansas City was headed by sophomore forwards Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) and Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), and freshman midfielder Sammi Arch (Overland Park, Kan.), as each player led the team with two shots a piece.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore goalkeeper Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) entered tonight's match with 34 saves on the season and added to that total with six stops tonight.
Up next, Kansas City will travel to South Dakota to take on South Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 16. The match is schedule to begin at 6 p.m. and can be viewed on gojacks.com.
