BROOKINGS, S.D. – After a game that featured two goals scored by the 'Roos, UMKC women's soccer fell to South Dakota State on Friday night, 3-2. The aggression from the 'Roos was shown throughout the game, as the team never seemed to give in.
“It's obviously a disappointing loss, but I don't think anyone can doubt the effort that our girls showed,” UMKC head coach Chris Cissell said. “I'm really proud of how we continued to fight to the very end.”
With the Jackrabbits (4-4-1) coming out of the gates strong and scoring within the first five minutes of the match, the 'Roos (1-5-2) answered back shortly with a goal of their own to tie the match at one a piece. Coming off of a rebound, sophomore MF Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), fired off a shot from the top of the box to record her first goal of the season.
At the 19' mark, South Dakota State took a 2-1 lead, after scoring from a penalty kick. Despite UMKC outshooting the Jackrabbits 5-4 at the end of the first period, the home team went into the locker room holding their 2-1 lead.
The energy that the 'Roos displayed never went away though, continuing to show their aggression and finishing the game on top in shots, 17-9, and corner kicks, 6-3. However, South Dakota State recorded its third and final goal of the matchup off of the crossbar in the 51'.
With just under a minute remaining in the match, sophomore F Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) knocked in her team-leading second goal of the year from inside the box.
Up next for UMKC, the 'Roos will continue their trip up north as the team will head to Vermillion, South Dakota, to take on South Dakota on Sunday at 1 p.m.
