
UMKC Defeats UT Rio Grande Valley, 3-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC volleyball stayed undefeated at Swinney Recreation Center in Western Athletic Conference play by taking down UT Rio Grande Valley, 3-1, on Thursday night.
UMKC (15-11, 8-5 WAC) took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning set one 25-21. Freshman Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the Roos with four kills, and senior Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) hit .600 with three kills, no errors, on five total attacks. UMKC hit .438 in the set, and held UTRGV (17-13, 6-7 WAC) to a .278 hitting efficiency in the set.
The Vaqueros evened the match at one set apiece, winning the second game 25-23. UTRGV hit just .174 in the set, but the Roos were held to .149 as a team. Junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa) led UMKC with four kills in the set, with Harrington and freshman Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) each contributing three kills.
UMKC bounced back from the set two loss to defeat UTRGV 27-25 in the third set. The Roos trailed for a majority of the match, finally taking their first lead at 16-15 before going on to the win. UMKC was powered by senior Madison Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) in the third set, as she tallied five kills on .333 hitting.
The fourth set was all UMKC, with the Roos winning 25-12. Harrington powered home six kills in the final set of the night, to end with a team-high 15. Porter, Hagedorn, and Mosier all reached double-digit kills, and senior Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa) tabbed 45 assists in the match to bring her season total to 1,031. With just 20 more assists this season, Brandt will move into 10th-place in the UMKC single-season records in the category.
The Roos hit .275 as a team on the night and tallied 13 total team blocks to UTRGV's four. Harrington and Sadler each tabbed eight block assists to lead the way for the Roos, and senior Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) notched 18 digs for the team lead.
UMKC closes the regular season at home with senior day on Saturday against New Mexico State. The Roos and Aggies are slated to play at 1 p.m. CT on the WAC Digital Network.
