
Roos Defend Home Court with 3-1 Win over CSUB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC volleyball played its first Western Athletic Conference match at home on Thursday evening, beating CSU Bakersfield 3-1 at Swinney Recreation Center.
UMKC won set one 25-20, with senior Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) leading the way with six kills. Hagedorn, the WAC's most efficient hitter with a .447 hitting percentage, recorded a .714 hitting efficiency in the first set. Fellow senior Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa) recorded 13 assists. Brandt joins Hagedorn at the top of a WAC stat category, leading the conference in assists with 647 (10.97 per set).
The Roos outlasted the 'Runners in set two, 27-25, with freshman Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) picking up six kills in the set. Hagedorn finished with five in the game to bring her total up to 11 for the match. Brandt picked up 11 assists and also chipped in defensively with five digs in the set.
CSUB got the best of UMKC in the third set, avoiding the sweep with a 25-23 win. Hagedorn and junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa) each tallied four kills. Freshman Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) and senior Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) each picked up six digs in the set.
UMKC was able to finish off CSUB in the fourth set with a 25-23 victory, with Porter picking up four kills. The Roos recorded five total blocks in the set, with Hagedorn tallying a solo and assisted block on her own.
The Roos hit .255 as a team, with Hagedorn hitting .500 and leading the team with 17 kills. Harrington, Porter, and senior Madison Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) each recorded 13 kills. Brandt finished with 44 assists and 12 digs, and Starr and Spiegel each tied for a team-high 14 digs. UMKC picked up 10 total blocks in the match (2 solo, 10 assisted), with Hagedorn recording three total blocks to lead the way.
UMKC is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8, as they welcome Grand Canyon to Swinney Rec. for a 1 p.m. match.
