
Roos Get Revenge on Utah Valley with 3-1 Victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC volleyball topped Utah Valley, 3-1, on Thursday night, avenging a five-set loss to the Wolverines earlier in the season. The Roos fell in the first set, 26-24, but bounced back to win the next three, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23, at Swinney Recreation Center.
Four Roos reached double-digit kills, with junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa) recorded a team-high 16. Senior Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) and freshman Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) picked up 15 and 14 kills, respectively, while senior Madison Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) notched 11 on the night. Harrington led the team with a .520 hitting percentage, with Hagedorn right behind her with a .481 hitting efficiency. Also contributing on the night with six kills was freshman Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) who recorded a .455 hitting percentage on 11 total attacks.
The 2016 Western Athletic Conference leader in assists per set, senior Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa), did what she always does, tallying a total of 55 assists in the contest.
UMKC recorded a season-best eight service aces, with freshman Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.), Porter, and senior Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) each tallying two apiece, while Brandt and Hagedorn each contributed with one.
Starr and Spiegel were the shining stars on defense, as the two combined for 28 of the team's 59 digs, with the senior Starr recording a team-best 16. Hagedorn contributed heavily to the Roos' stellar defense, posting five block assists, and Harrington chipped in on two, as UMKC recorded five total team blocks.
The Roos held the set point in the opening game at 24-22, but let the win slip through their fingers. From there, UMKC turned on the power used the second set as a rallying point, hitting .452 as a team in the set. After taking set two, the Roos weren't going to accept another loss, and finished off the Wolverines in four sets.
UMKC is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 29, hosting Seattle U for a 1 p.m. CT match at Swinney Recreation Center.
