(Lawrence, Kan.) -- A goal in the 82nd minute spoiled an otherwise stellar performance by Nina Tzianos, as No. 20 Kansas narrowly escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Kangaroos on Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan.
The Jayhawks put a dozen attempts on net, but Tzianos denied the first nine attempts to frustrate the hosts and maintain a scoreless tie.
“I'm proud of our team,” said head coach Chris Cissell. “We competed with passion, heart, and pride. The team executed our game plan and we challenged an extremely talented group in Kansas.”
The Jayhawks controlled possession for much of the match, but the defensive effort from UMKC was palpable as the 'Roos focused on keeping KU off of the scoreboard in front of a goalkeeper who was, by all accounts, handing in one of the best performances of her career.
One goal is a season-low for Kansas, who figures to continue its ascent up the NSCAA Top 25 with a program best 8-0 start. Kansas City is just the third team this season to play the Jayhawks within a single goal.
Tzianos now ranks second in the Western Athletic Conference in goals against average, save percentage, and saves per game, while adding to her WAC-leading save total which now stands at 51.
The Kangaroos will wrap up their non-conference slate on Friday with a visit to Creighton.
