Sarah Todd, Kara Priest, and Alyssa Elver each scored a goal, Ellie Chadick picked up a pair of assists, and Nina Tzianos pitched her second shutout of the season as UMKC defeated WIU, 3-0, at Durwood Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The 'Roos (3-2-2) wasted no time in getting on the board, getting their first goal of the game from what once was an unlikely source. Defender Sarah Todd, who scored her first goal since 2012 a week ago at Eastern Illinois, netted her second goal of the season in the fifth minute of the match, rocking home a frozen rope from the corner of the 18-yard box to give the hosts an early advantage.
Just over three minutes later, it was freshman Kara Priest adding to her team-leading total with her fourth goal of the season, an opportunity created by Ellie Chadick, who forced WIU goalkeeper Victoria Kappel to deflect her initial shot on goal. Priest fielded the carom and snuck a one-timer past Kappel for the two-goal lead.
The 2-0 score would stand for over 60 minutes in spite of constant pressure being applied by UMKC. The 'Roos dominated time of possession and kept Kappel under constant duress, outshooting the Leathernecks (1-6) 13-5 in the first half and 22-8 overall.
In the 70th minute, Chadick again created a scoring opportunity for the 'Roos on the attack, firing a shot off the arm of a WIU defender inside of the six-yard box, only for the deflection to find the sure foot of Alyssa Elver. Elver put the biscuit in the basket, her second goal of the season, to remove all doubt.
Tzianos was forced to make only four saves, but make them she did, notching her second goose egg of the year behind a strong effort from the UMKC backline -- a quartet of Todd, Kaely Tott, Erika Teson, and Emily Herndon, who emphatically turned away most semblances of offensive advancement from the visitors.
The 'Roos will head west on I-70 on Sunday for the program's first-ever meeting with No. 20 Kansas. The Jayhawks shut out Cal State Northridge on Friday to improve to 7-0 on the season; the best start in recent memory for KU.
