Tulsa, Okla. – A fourth-minute goal proved decisive as Tulsa shot its way to a 2-0 victory over UMKC in the final game of the Tulsa Invitational on Sunday.
The Golden Hurricane (4-0) doubled the 'Roos' (1-2-1) shot total (16-8) and corner kick opportunities (8-4), due, in large part, to putting the visitors behind the eight ball with a Lauren King goal just 3:09 into the match.
UMKC was markedly more successful in exercising offensive aggression in the second half, trailing in shots just 7-6 and putting a pair of attempts on net. Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, Tulsa goalkeeper Rebecca Deffer was up to the challenge each time, redirecting all three shots on goal to preserve the shutout for the hosts.
Kansas City goalkeeper Nina Tzianos made seven saves of her own, including five in the first half to keep the Golden Hurricane at bay. But a Rachel Thun penalty kick at 59' was enough to put the game away.
Tzianos, along with defenders Sarah Todd and Erika Teson, were named to the All-Tournament team.
The 'Roos will head to Eastern Illinois on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
