(Little Rock, Ark.) – Three different players scored goals for Kansas City as the 'Roos stormed past the host UALR Trojans 3-1 on Friday.
UMKC was on the attack early and often, as Kaely Tott and Ashley Gann each managed to get shots off in the game's second minute. In the 12th minute, Alyssa Elver intercepted a Trojan passed and tucked a low shot just past the UALR keeper to give the 'Roos a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans responded just over 12 minutes later when Kailie Holloway knocked an Ariel Galletti assist beyond UMKC goalkeeper Nina Tzianos to knot the match at 1-1.
“We made some tactical changes at halftime and the girls responded well,” said UMKC head coach Chris Cissell. “I thought we played poorly in the first half, but we made some changes at the half and we were much better in the second half.”
Twelve minutes into the second half, Elver found Emily Herndon who took a shot from distance, well outside of the 18-yard box. The shot bounced just in front of UALR goalkeeper Sara Cavanagh, Cavanagh dropped to make the save, but the ball bounced high, just off of her fingertips, and into the net.
The 'Roos added some insurance in the 67th minute on an exchange from Jordan Andrzejewski, to Allison Schau, to a wide-open Ellie Chadick. Chadick put the biscuit in the basket to distance Kansas City from UALR, 3-1. The goal chased Cavanagh from the contest.
“I was proud of the girls,” said Cissell. “I thought they played well and competed like crazy. It was good to get a two-goal win on the road. We played the kind of soccer that we expect to play.”
As an added benefit, Cissell was able to get each player into the contest for UMKC.
The 'Roos will stay in the heart of the Natural State to face Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark., on Sunday at 2 p.m.
