(Moscow, Idaho) – Taylor Bare scored two goals and the Kansas City women's soccer team erased a 1-0 halftime deficit en route to a 2-1 overtime victory over the host Idaho Vandals on Sunday.
The teams wasted no time getting acquainted; as Idaho (2-8-0, 2-1-0) forward Alyssa Pease fired the game's first shot on goal just 48 seconds into the match, but was denied by goalkeeper Nina Tzianos. Minutes later, a foul inside of the box provided a penalty kick opportunity for UMKC (5-6-1, 2-2-0) to be taken by Ashley Gann, but the attempt sailed wide.
In the 21st minute, Alyssa Lloyd put the Vandals on the board. Katie Baran assisted on the play and the 'Roos would carry the one goal deficit into the half.
The teams traded barbs to no avail for much of the second half, before Bare broke through in the 76th minute for her fourth goal of the season, taking advantage of a well-played ball by Sarah Todd.
“I thought we played really well after halftime,” said head coach Chris Cissell. “Once we got the game tied, we were really pushing for the go-ahead goal.”
UMKC's unwillingness to settle for the tie paid off 10 minutes into the extra frame, as Bare struck once more, this time from 18 yards out off of an Ellie Chadick assist. The Anoka, Minn.-native's fifth goal of the season was also good for the 'Roos' fifth victory of the season.
Kansas City outshot Idaho 11-5 after intermission.
“I'm just really proud of the way the girls battled back,” said Cissell. “We were in a tough spot, being down a goal, on the road, up against a team that was unbeaten in league play. Our players showed a lot of heart to come back the way that they did.”
Kansas City will return home to Durwood Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4, for a Founders Week matchup with Grand Canyon. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
