(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City women's soccer team established new program records for goals in a half and goals in a game en route to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Antelopes of Grand Canyon on Friday night.
Senior forward Taylor Bare got the scoring started in the 25th minute, putting UMKC on the board with a breakaway goal, made unique by the fact that it was assisted by goalkeeper Nina Tzianos, who delivered the long pass to a snowbirding Bare.
Bare wasted no time in notching her second goal of the night, connecting just over 10 minutes later after a defender deflected her initial shot attempt. The carom fell perfectly for a follow up attempt and Bare capitalized with a strike into the lower left corner of the net to give the 'Roos a 2-0 lead.
The game appeared as though it was on the verge of getting out of hand, but the 'Lopes – albeit momentarily – had other ideas.
In the 39th minute, Joanna Lagunas struck from over 40 yards out, dropping a Hail Mary just over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Nina Tzianos to put Grand Canyon on the board and cut the UMKC margin in half.
Moments later, with just over one minute separating the Kangaroos from a halftime lead, the ball landed in a scrum just inside of the 18-yard box. UMKC defenders were unable to clear it, and Antelope forward Jessica Fitzgerald delivered the equalizer to knot the tally at 2-2.
“We could have come into halftime panicked and falling apart that we blew a two- nil lead at home,” said head coach Chris Cissell. “But we came out in the second half and just fought and battled and played really good soccer and were determined to get the results.”
Said results came early and often for the 'Roos following intermission, as Bare continued her scoring barrage with her third goal of the contest in the 48th minute of the match. The Anoka, Minn.-native's hat trick is a single-game school record.
“I brought Taylor Bare into the office today and I told her she was going to have a hat trick tonight,” said Cissell. “I don't know why. I just had a weird feeling. So hopefully I get that weird feeling again.”
Bare was done scoring for the night, but her teammates were not. Ellie Chadick got into mix, depositing a Kaely Tott entry between the sticks to extend the UMKC lead to 4-2 at 54'. The goal was Chadick's fourth of the season.
Chadick was interested in sharing the wealth, as well, on this night. In minute 68, she found Alyssa Elver just in front of the six yard box, Elver found the back of the net for her third goal of the season, and the route was officially on.
Freshman Emily Herndon capped the scoring explosion in the 78th minute, making the most of a Tott corner kick to set the final margin at 6-2. The assist was Tott's fifth; the goal, Herndon's fourth.
“I'm really proud of them,” said Cissell. “We've never even scored four goals in the history of the program and then we get four in a half. I think the girls are really buying in and listening and believing in themselves. I feel like we're playing good soccer at the right time right now.”
