(Omaha, Neb.) – An Omaha goal in the 83rd minute spoiled a 1-0 UMKC men's soccer lead on Tuesday, and after two overtimes the game finished in a 1-1 tie.
It was a physical contest as the teams combined for eight cards (six yellow, two red) and 42 fouls. Omaha (1-5-1) tallied 30 of those fouls and picked up five of the cards.
Junior forward Jordan Rideout got on the board for the second straight game but the 'Roos finished with their third tie of the season. UMKC (1-3-3) got on the board first in the contest when Rideout finished a shot into the left corner on a through ball by senior Guerrero Pino in the 43rd minute.
The 'Roos took that 1-0 lead into the half. There were very few opportunities to score in the period with only eight shots being attempted between the two teams, while UNO was whistled for 16 fouls (compared to five for Kansas City). Most of the possession was in favor of UMKC.
The second stanza continued right along the physical theme, and it got nasty in the 63rd minute when Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Corby and Omaha's Craig Buettner were both issued red cards and ejected from the contest. That meant the 'Roos had to insert junior Chris McGaughey into the net. To that point, Corby had only been forced to make one save.
The 'Roos strategy started to change over the next 20 minutes, sitting back and trying to preserve the win, but Omaha broke through in the 83rd minute for the equalizer. Christian Garcia hit a shot from 25 yards out into the top left corner of the net, sending it into overtime.
In the first overtime, each team took a shot, while UNO had two in the second OT. The Mavericks also added seven more fouls to the count in the OT sessions. Neither could get the game-winner though, and the schools left the night with the all-time series still tied, 1-1-1.
UNO used a heavy second-half onslaught to get the game tied to take a 22-6 shot advantage. McGaughey finished with four saves for UMKC. Rideout led the 'Roos with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Kansas City will play its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday night when it heads to Drake for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff in Des Moines, Iowa.
