The Games
The 'Roos hit the road for their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday night when they battle Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The 'Roos have scored in four straight games, posting a 1-1-2 record during that span, while Drake comes in on a three-game unbeaten streak and an upset of No. 14 New Mexico on the road.
The Coaches
In his 16th season at UMKC, Rick Benben is the winningest coach in school history, posting a 113-140-32 record. Under his guidance, UMKC has captured four conference regular season titles and has made three appearances in the NCAA College Cup with the most recent appearance coming in 2008. Benben, the fourth head coach in the Division I era, was inducted into the UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
Sean Holmes is in his 16th season at Drake, and 21st as a head coach, boasting a 208-158-35 overall record. At Drake he has a 130-132-33 record and has taken the Bulldogs to multiple NCAA tournament berths. He is also the winningest soccer coach in school history.
The Series
The 'Roos are playing Drake for the 26th time, the most played non-conference series in UMKC history. The 'Roos have played the Bulldogs every season since 1990 except in the year 2000.
Drake leads the series 17-6-2 and has won the last three meetings, all by one goal. On the road, UMKC has a 1-10-1 mark against the Bulldogs, winning in Des Moines only in 2001.
Under Benben, UMKC is 6-9-2 overall against Drake, while the Bulldogs are 9-6-2 under Holmes.
Scouting the Competition
Drake comes into Saturday night's matchup with a 2-3-2 overall record, but has gone 2-0-1 in its last three games. The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 14 New Mexico as well. After allowing 15 goals in their first five games, they have shut out their last two opponents.
Individually they are paced by Danton Irelan with three goals, while Jarred Arde has two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod has not allowed a goal in 226 minutes and has a 2-0-1 overall record with 11 saves. As a team, Drake has been out-shot 113-94 on the season.
A Win Against Drake Means...
- UMKC would have scored in five straight games.
- Kansas City would have defeated Drake for the first time since 2009, and the first on the road since 2001.
- The 'Roos would have snapped the Bulldogs' three-game unbeaten streak and two-game shutout streak.
