(Des Moines, Iowa) – Drake scored in the third minute of men's soccer action on Saturday night and made it hold up, defeating UMKC 1-0 in the 'Roos final non-conference game of the regular season.
Drake (3-3-2) got the eventual game-winning goal at the 2:48 mark when Bryan Jantsch received a pass that put him in a 1-on-1 opportunity that he slid past UMKC (1-4-3) goalkeeper Chris McGaughey into the corner.
The 'Roos nearly equalized in the eighth minute when junior forward Jordan Rideout had a shot hit the post. Rideout was close to scoring on several occasions in the first half, taking five shots, including two on goal, but couldn't get one past Drake goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod.
It was an evenly played opening period as Drake held a narrow 8-6 advantage in shots, and it was 2-2 in shots on goal.
The second half saw much of the same with each squad putting three shots on frame. Tato Chiaparro was the biggest threat for the 'Roos, taking all three of those shots, but again, MacLeod was able to save each, and earn the shutout.
Drake extended its unbeaten streak to four games with the win, while collecting its third straight shutout.
Each team finished with five shots on goal, while the Bulldogs took an 18-10 in total shots. McGaughey had four saves on the night, while MacLeod had five.
Up next, Kansas City will begin WAC play for the first time ever when it faces Houston Baptist on Saturday night in the annual Homecoming game at 7:00 p.m. This year, with it being the 80th anniversary of UMKC, Homecoming Week has been tabbed as Founders Week.
