(Las Cruces, N.M.) – The host New Mexico State Aggies exacted some revenge on Sunday afternoon, converting a penalty kick in the 87th minute to hand Kansas City its first conference loss of the season, 2-1.
The 'Roos (4-5-1, 1-1-0) began by picking up just where they left off on Friday, with Kaely Tott finding Taylor Bare off of a free kick and Bare finding the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
The Aggies (4-5-1, 1-1-0) answered just over 12 minutes later as Katie Smith was able to beat UMKC goalkeeper Nina Tzianos off of a rebound, knotting the match at one goal apiece.
It appeared as though the contest was headed for overtime when disaster struck for the 'Roos with less than four minutes remaining in the second half.
Tzianos, who matched a season-high with seven stops, was whistled for a foul in the box and issued a yellow card – the team's fourth yellow card of the match – setting up a penalty kick for senior midfielder Daisy Hernandez. Hernandez converted the try, giving New Mexico State a 2-1 advantage that it would not relinquish.
The gut-wrenching defeat marked the third time this season that Kansas City has surrendered a go-head goal with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
The 'Roos will look to bounce back on Friday at Seattle. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific Standard Time – 9 p.m. local time.
