(Bakersfield, Calif.) – Taylor Bare's goal-scoring onslaught resumed on Sunday afternoon at Bakersfield, as the senior forward led Kansas City to a 3-0 victory over the host Roadrunners.
The opening half was dominated by defense, as both keepers kept the net clean for the first 41 minutes. Disaster struck for Bakersfield (3-10-1, 2-4-1) at 42' with Kaely Tott lining up a corner kick for UMKC (7-7-1, 4-3-0). Tott, as she is apt to do, played a dangerous ball into the box that ricocheted off of a Roadrunner defender and snuck between the sticks to put the 'Roos out in front 1-0.
The second half began much like the first stanza, with both teams finding staunch defensive resistance amid respective attempts at locating points. Such difficulty came to an abrupt end for the visitors, however, in the 72nd minute, as Ellie Chadick and Alyssa Elver collaborated, touch pass to touch pass, to set Bare up for her first goal of the match.
Nearly 16 minutes later, with Kansas City looking to close out a road victory, another critical Bakersfield error allowed Bare & Co. to slam the door shut. The Anoka, Minn.-native intercepted a pass meant for Ornela, composed herself, and fired the proverbial nail beyond the keeper and into the coffin.
“I'm very proud of our performance today, on the road, against a conference opponent, on the heels of significant travel,” said head coach Chris Cissell. “The girls came in focused on getting the win. I'm pleased with their effort.”
After scoring five times in the last three games, Bare now leads the Western Athletic Conference with 10 goals. In the process, she has also set a new program record for goals in a season – while concurrently building upon her record for career goals (27).
Not to be outdone, UMKC goalkeeper Nina Tzianos denied both Roadrunner shots on goal to earn her third shutout of the season. The 'Roos improve to 5-2-1 overall when Tzianos holds the opponent to no more than one goal.
In what has also become a developing trend, Kansas City is now 7-1-0 when creating more corner kick opportunities than its opponent.
