The Game
The 'Roos head west to Phoenix, Ariz. this weekend for their final WAC road trip of the regular season. Kansas City will become the first team in the conference to visit each league venue.
The Coaches
In his third year at helm, head coach Chris Cissell has already matched his team's 2012 win total with six victories. In two seasons, Cissell compiled a record of 14-17-8; marked success for a program that managed just two victories in its first two seasons.
Cissell, who spent a combined 20 seasons at William Jewell as the head coach for the men's and women's soccer programs, led the Cardinals to a combined record of 282-106-22.
The former Summit League Coach of the Year picked up career win No. 300 in a 3-0 win over New Mexico State on Sept. 20.
Stevie Gill was named head coach of the Grand Canyon University women's soccer program in March of 2008 after serving as an assistant coach for six years, two of them with the men's program at GCU.
Gill captained the 1996 GCU men's soccer team that was inducted into the 2010 Grand Canyon University Hall of Fame after winning the program's lone Division II National Championship title. Gill also received the prestigious Dr. Roland L. Beck Senior Scholar Athlete Award for demonstrating excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, and Christian character.
The Series
The 'Roos took the first meeting between the two teams to grab a 1-0 series lead.
Scouting the Competition
The Antelopes split last weekend's home series, falling 5-0 to Seattle U on Friday and winning 2-0 over Idaho on Sunday. It was the second shutout victory for GCU this season, as they defeated Colorado State 1-0 on Sept. 6.
Cassie Beckwith recorded her third goal of the season, tied for the team lead, and her second game-winner, which leads the squad. Chelsea Santos picked up her first score of the season to give GCU the 2-0 advantage in the second half of their game versus Idaho.
In the previous match between the 'Roos and 'Lopes, UMKC achieved program single game records for goals in a half (4) and goals in a game (6). Meanwhile, senior forward Taylor Bare set a single-game school record of her own, with a three goals.
Up Next
Kansas City will close out the regular season with back to back weekend series versus league foes.
First things first for the 'Roos, Idaho and Seattle will visit Durwood Stadium next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
UMKC handled the Vandals when the teams met in Moscow, Idaho on Sept. 29, knocking off the host team in overtime, 2-1.
The 'Roos had no such luck in the Emerald City, falling victim to the Redhawks 3-0. The loss served as the first time UMKC was held without a goal in conference play in 2013.
Since a 2-2 start, Seattle has won nine straight games, including a 6-0 mark in WAC contests.
