The 'Roos opened the match with a sluggish first set, falling behind 4-1, before a kill by freshman Sydney Crimmins cut the Jayhawk lead to two at 9-7. KU answered the UMKC rally with seven straight to build their lead to nine, but a block from freshmen Jessica Hendin and Emma Hagedorn trimmed the margin to 16-10. Kansas again answered, this time connecting on five straight to build their lead to 21-10. Kansas City would have one last rally while facing set point, notching three straight, including kills by seniors Emily Lucas and Ella Meier, but the comeback would fall short as the Jayhawks held on for the 25-15 victory.
In the second set, the Kangaroos found themselves down 3-0 early in the set, and after trading the next six points with KU, the Jayhawks used a 5-0 run to build their lead to eight. A KU error and an ace from freshman Lindsay Zych trimmed the deficit to six, and the two squads split the next 16 points, keeping the margin at six with the score 19-13. A 3-0 Kansas run pushed the lead to a set-high 10, but a 4-1 stretch by UMKC, including kills by Meier and Lucas and an ace by sophomore Morgan Voorhes brought the 'Roos to within seven. Kansas, however, connected on the set's final point for the 25-17 set win, taking a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Coming out of the break, the 'Roos grabbed their first lead of the match at 2-1, before falling behind 8-5. UMKC, though, used a 4-1 rally, including kills by freshman Skyler Muff and senior Brittany Fossier, a block by Fossier and Lucas and an ace by freshman Nicole Wemhoff, to battle back and tie the set at nine. Kansas would quickly regain control of the set with a 9-2 run, before a Chloe Jarema kill ended the rally. The 'Roos would add six more points the rest of the way, including a pair of kills and a block assist from Lucas, but the Jayhawks would take the match with a 25-17 win.
For the 'Roos, Lucas tallied team-highs with eight kills and two blocks, while also adding seven digs. Miller paced the team in the back row with 14 digs, while Meier's 12 aces were tops for UMKC.
The Blue & Gold will back in action again on this weekend when they head to Boiling Springs, N.C., on Sep. 7-8 for the Runnin' Bulldog Classic.
