The Kangaroos built early leads in each of the first two sets, but were unable to close out either game, falling 25-18 and 25-21.
In the third set, the Colonials looked to be on their way to a sweep of the 'Roos, jumping out to a 5-0 lead, but after a UMKC timeout the 'Roos began their comeback with 13 of the next 18 points to tie the set. The two squads would be tied seven more times, including late at 23, but back-to-back errors by George Washington gave UMKC the 25-23 win and cut the lead in half.
With their backs still against the wall, the Kangaroos again found themselves trailing early in the set, this time at 9-5. The 'Roos would battle back with a 5-1 rally, started by back-to-back kills by senior Emily Lucas and freshman Emma Hagedorn, and knot the contest at 10. The Colonials would push the lead back to three before serving for the match leading 24-23. UMKC, though, would not go quietly, as back-to-back kills by Muff and an ace by freshman Lindsay Zych forced a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, the 'Roos jumped all over George Washington, staking an 8-1 lead nine points in, getting three kills from Muff and one each from Lucas, sophomore Morgan Voorhes and freshman Sydney Crimmins, as well as an ace from freshman Taryn Miller. The Colonials would cut the lead to 8-3, but four straight by the 'Roos, including another Muff kill, a kill from senior Ella Meier and another Zych ace, put the lead at 12-3. George Washington would score the matches next point, but the 'Roos would close out the contest with the final three points on kills from Muff, Meier and Zych for their third straight win.
For the Kangaroos, Lucas (12 kills and 10 digs) and freshman Nicole Wemhoff (32 assists and 12 digs) each notched double-doubles, while Miller's 23 digs marked a new career-high.
Offensively, Crimmins (nine kills, .333%), Hagedorn (six kills, .417%) and Meier (five kills, 4.55%) each registered five or more kills with a .300 or better hitting percentage, while Voorhes added eight kills to the effort. At the net, Crimmins and Hagedorn each recorded five blocks.
The Blue & Gold will wrap-up play in the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic at 8 p.m. tonight against host Wyoming.
