(Kansas City, Mo.) -- The Kansas City volleyball team (15-12, 7-7) fell in a Summit League contest on Friday night, 3-1, to North Dakota State (11-15, 7-7) despite four 'Roos finishing with 10 or more kills and a fifth registering nine.
For the Kangaroos, freshmen Emma Hagedorn, Skyler Muff and Jessica Hendin each notched a team-high 12 kills, while senior Emily Lucas finished with 11. A fourth freshman, Sydney Crimmins, meanwhile, added nine kills to the Kansas City offensive attack.
In the match, North Dakota State built an early 1-0 lead with a 25-15 first set win before quickly extending the advantage to two despite a late charge by the 'Roos in set two.
The Bison went ahead 9-6 in the second set, but four straight by the 'Roos with the score at 11-9, including the final three on Crimmins kills, put UMKC ahead by four midway through the match. NDSU would reclaim the lead and extend the margin to four at 18-14, but the 'Roos again battled back to even the set late at 22-22 and 23-23 on kills from Hagedorn and Muff. The comeback, however, would fall just short as the Bison notched the final two points for the 25-23 win heading into the intermission.
Coming out of the break, the Kangaroos would cut the deficit in half with a 25-19 third set victory. The 'Roos found themselves down 10-8 early, before reeling off seven straight to take a 15-10 lead. North Dakota State scratched back to tie the set at 17-17, but eight of the final 10 points went UMKC's way, trimming the margin to one.
In the fourth set, however, the Bison ended the match with a 25-19 victory after leading the entire set.
For Kansas City, setters Nicole Wemhoff and Ella Meier finished with 28 and 20 assists, respectively, while defensively, freshman Taryn Miller recorded a team-high 20 digs.
Lucas, meanwhile, chipped in 10 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
The Blue & Gold will back in action again on Sunday when they host South Dakota State on Senior Day at 2 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center.
