(Kansas City, Mo.) - The Kansas City volleyball team (15-10) reached 15 wins for just the third time in school history with its 3-0 win over Southeast Missouri State (16-10) on Tuesday night at the Swinney Recreation Center.
The 15 wins this season match the total by the 2009 squad and now trail only the 20 victories by the 1999 edition of the Kangaroos.
In the match, the 'Roos hit .252 as a team, while freshmen Skyler Muff (.400), Nicole Wemhoff (.333), Sydney Crimmins (.333) and Emma Hagedorn (.333) all hit over .320 in the contest.
For Wemhoff, her 38 assists, five kills and .333 hitting percentage all rank as new career-highs for the Kansas City, Mo., native.
In the opening set, UMKC built a four point lead at 13-9 midway through the set after a kill by Crimmins. The Redhawks, though, battled back to take a 17-16 lead, thanks to an ace and a UMKC error. After a timeout by head coach Christi Posey, the 'Roos used a 4-0 rally to reclaim the lead before taking the set 25-20.
The 'Roos would build their lead to 2-0 in the match with a 25-19 third set win, trailing only once in the set at 1-0 and leading by as many as six three times, including the final margin.
In the final set, the Kangaroos closed out the match after a 6-1 run, started by an Emily Lucas ace, gave UMKC a 23-17 advantage late in the set. SEMO would close the margin to four, scoring the next two points, but Kansas City answered with two of the final three for the 25-20 win.
Offensively for UMKC, Lucas led the team with 11 kills, while Hagedorn also reached double figures with 10. Muff and freshman Jessica Hendin, meanwhile, added nine and eight, respectively.
In the back row, freshman Taryn Miller recorded a team-high 16 digs, while Hendin and freshman Lindsay Zych each added 14.
At the net, Crimmins, Hagedorn and Muff all had three blocks.
