
Hagedorn Leads 'Roos With 11 Kills And Nine Blocks In Loss To Grizzlies

(Kansas City, Mo.) - Freshman Emma Hagedorn finished with team-highs of 11 kills and nine blocks, while fellow freshman Nicole Wemhoff carded her second double-double in as many nights with 35 assists and 10 digs as the Kansas City volleyball team (14-10, 7-5) fell on Saturday night, 3-0, to Oakland (13-10, 6-5) at the O'Rena.
In the opening set, the 'Roos jumped out to a 4-0 lead before extending it to six at 12-6. The Golden Grizzlies, however, would cut the lead to five at 15-10 before using a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the match. UMKC would close to within two late at 21-19, but OU would hold on for the 25-21 first set win.
The Kangaroos again built an early lead in the second set, this time moving ahead 4-1. Kansas City would maintain its three point lead six points later, but a 10-1 run by the Grizzlies put them ahead 14-8. The 'Roos would cut the deficit to one late at 17-16, but could not complete the comeback as Oakland would move ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-19 win.
In the third set, the 'Roos found themselves trailing late at 24-21, but three of the next four points went to UMKC, including a kills by freshman Sydney Crimmins and junior Chloe Jarema and an ace by freshman Taryn Miller, knotting the set at 25. Oakland, though, notched the final two points of the match for the 27-25 set win and 3-0 match win.
For the 'Roos, senior Emily Lucas finished with eight kills and 16 digs, while Miller added a team-high 17 digs.
Defensively, Kansas City registered 11 blocks, including a career-high four from Wemhoff.
The Blue & Gold will back in action again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they take on in-state rival Southeast Missouri State at the SRC.
