
'Roos Move Into Second Place With 3-1 Win Over IUPUI

(Kansas City, Mo.) - Senior Emily Lucas led the Kansas City Volleyball team (14-8, 7-3) to a 3-1 win over IUPUI (14-8, 7-3) on Sunday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center with a match-high 23 kills and 13 digs for her 10th double-double of the season, moving the Kangaroos into a tie for second in the Summit League standings.
Freshman Emma Hagedorn, meanwhile, notched her first career double-double with 12 kills and a career-high 10 blocks, the most by a 'Roo this season, while freshman setter Nicole Wemhoff finished with 25 assists and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.
The 'Roos built an early 1-0 lead in the match, winning the first set 25-19 after taking a 10-5 lead early. IUPUI would close the gap to two at 15-13, but four straight from Kansas City, including two Wemhoff aces, pushed the margin to six at 19-13. The Jaguars would get no closer than four the rest of the way as the 'Roos held on for the win.
In the second set, the Jags evened the match heading into the intermission with a 25-21 victory.
Coming out of the break, UMKC regained control of the match with a third set win after jumping out to a nine point lead at 16-7. The 'Roos would maintain the nine point advantage at 21-12 before taking the set 25-19.
In the fourth set, the 'Roos fell behind early, trailing by six at 15-9 before using an 11-1 rally to take a 20-16 lead. IUPUI would battle back to take a 24-23 lead late, but the final two points went UMKC's way, as Lucas and freshman Taryn Miller ended the match with back-to-back kills.
Defensively, five 'Roos topped the 10 dig mark, including career-highs of 28 by Miller and 17 by freshman Jessica Hendin. Freshman Lindsay Zych, meanwhile, chipped in 12 digs, while freshman Sydney Crimmins recorded five kills and a career-high seven blocks..
On the offensive side, senior Ella Meier finished with a team-high 28 assists, while freshman Skyler Muff added 10 kills.
The Blue & Gold will back in action again on Friday at 6 p.m. when they visit Fort Wayne in a battle for first place in The Summit League.
