
UMKC Falls To Leathernecks 3-1 In Summit League Showdown

In the first set, the Kangaroos jumped ahead with a 25-22 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match. In the set, the 'Roos fell behind early 7-4 before pulling to within one at 9-8. After a Leatherneck point, a 5-0 run by UMKC put the 'Roos on top 13-10. Western Illinois then fought back to tie the set at 14 before going back ahead 18-17. A 6-1 run from the 'Roos though, put UMKC back in front 23-19, and a kill from senior Elizabeth Beck closed out the set for the Kangaroos.
In set two, WIU went ahead 10-4 before UMKC pulled to within one at 22-21 late in the set. The Leatherneck though closed out the set on a 3-1 run to even the match at one heading into the break.
Coming out of intermission, Western Illinois took its first lead of the match with a 25-20 third set victory. In the set, WIU recorded the first two points of the set, but a 4-0 run by the 'Roos put them in front 4-2. UMKC built its lead to as many as three at 17-14 on a kill from senior Christiana McQuin, but the Leathernecks notched seven of the next eight points to take a 21-18 lead. After a point from the 'Roos, Western Illinois scored four of the final five points to take the set.
In the fourth set, the Leathernecks ended the match with a 25-21 win. In the set, the 'Roos trailed by seven at 24-17 before cutting the lead to three with a 4-0 run. The rally though fell short and WIU took the match.
For UMKC, Beck (12), junior Emily Lucas (12) and McQuin (11) all finished with double-digit kills, while senior Kelsey Knoche (15), Lucas (11) and senior Nicole Kerkman (10) had 10 or more digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Sunday when they host IUPUI in a Summit League contest at 2 p.m.
