
IPFW Takes Down 'Roos In Four

(Kansas City, Mo.) -- The UMKC volleyball team (6-13, 0-9) dropped its Summit League contest on Saturday night, 3-1 to IPFW (13-6, 6-2) at the Gates Sports Center.
Leading the way for the 'Roos was junior Emily Lucas, as the outside hitter notched a team-high 16 kills, while fellow junior Ella Meier collected 34 assists and 23 digs for the squad.
UMKC got out to a hot start in the match, taking the first set 25-20. The 'Roos fell behind early in the set 1-0 and 3-2, but an 8-4 run, capped by a Lucas kill, put UMKC in front 10-7. The 'Roos then stretched the lead to 21-16 after an IPFW error and Lucas notched the last two 'Roo points on kills to give UMKC the 1-0 lead.
The Mastodons though quickly answered with a 25-18 second set victory to tie the match heading into intermission.
Coming out the break, IPFW took its first lead of the match with a 25-23 win in the third set. UMKC led early in the set, 6-4, but a 7-2 run by the 'Dons gave IPFW a 13-8 lead midway through. The 'Roos though fought back, retaking the lead late at 22-21, but IPFW scored four of the final five points for the win.
In the fourth set, the Kangaroos built a 5-1 lead six points in after kills from Lucas, senior Demetria Williams and senior Elizabeth Beck, but a 14-3 run by IPFW put them in front, 15-8. The 'Roos then pulled to within four at 24-20, but the 'Dons notched the matches last point for the 3-1 match victory.
For the 'Roos, senior Kelsey Knoche and Beck each had nine kills, while senior Nicole Kerkman recorded 21 digs. Knoche and senior Erin Wellwood, meanwhile, registered 12 and 15 digs, respectively. At the net, Williams finished with a team-high seven blocks.
The Blue and Gold will be in action again on Friday when they host Oral Roberts at the Swinney Recreation Center.
