Des Moines, Iowa -- UMKC closed out its non-conference schedule on Tuesday night with a doubleheader against Drake. The Kangaroos rapped out 12 hits between the games but couldn't come up with a win in either contest. Lauren Cross went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader for UMKC.
Despite UMKC loading the bases in the top of the first, neither team was able to score through the first two innings.
Drake got on the board in the bottom of the third, as Bridget Shields reached on an error to lead off the inning. The Bulldogs pushed her around the bases for a 1-0 lead, adding four in the bottom of the fourth.
The Kangaroos managed to put a baserunner aboard in the top half of each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't push a run across, falling 5-0.
In the nightcap, Drake struck first again, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first, but UMKC was able to answer in the top half of the second. Cross led off the inning with a single, scoring on the next at-bat. Carli Slagle singled to left, advancing to third as the throw from left was a bit off the mark allowing Cross to score. The Kangaroos couldn't push Slagle across, however, retiring in order.
It would come back to haunt them, as Drake struck for five runs in the bottom of the second and four in the bottom of the third to take a 10-1 lead.
Slagle would score in the top of the fourth to pull UMKC within eight, but Drake responded in its half of the inning. Monica Canisales led off the fifth with a double to left field, advancing to third on a passed ball. Megan Ussary plated Canisales as she grounded out to second, but the Kangaroos weren't able to come any closer, dropping the second game as well.
Samantha Hurst and Taya Upkes took the losses as the Kangaroos fell to 8-28 on the year. UMKC closes out its regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Western Illinois. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. CT start in Macomb, Ill.
