Wichita, Kan. -- The UMKC Softball team closed out the 2008 Shocker Invitational with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon. Despite a solo home run from Samantha Hurst, UMKC couldn't recover from a six-run third inning outburst by South Dakota State and couldn't figure out the pitching of Wichita State's Brianna Smet, falling in both games.
UMKC was chomping at the bit following a lengthy delay in the start of the first game, posting one run in the top of the first and adding two more in the top of the third. Alicia Baker picked up RBIs on two of the first three Kangaroo runs, her fifth and sixth of the tournament.
South Dakota State would respond with a flurry of runs in the bottom half of the third, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on six hits, although four of the six runs would be charged to Taya Upkes.
In the top of the fourth, Hurst hit a towering shot to right field with two outs to cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Jackrabbits had an answer in their half of the inning, scoring two.
The Kangaroos would keep their fellow Summit League off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as Hurst returned to the circle, but were only able to create single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh as they fell on the afternoon.
In the tournament finale, the Kangaroos ran into a Shocker team stung from an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Iowa State immediately prior, falling 7-0.
UMKC had a bit of a bad break hit them in the first inning, as Wichita State's Cynthia Verhulst appeared to be hit by a pitch. The ball was deemed to have hit the handle of her bat, and she hit a two-run homer on the next pitch.
The Kangaroos threatened in the bottom of the second as Lauren Cross led off with a single to right and advanced to third on the next two batters, but UMKC couldn't push a run across.
The Shockers added runs in the third and sixth before putting the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with a three-run spurt.
UMKC (2-10) finishes the tournament with a record of 1-4. Hurst was tops on the offensive ledger for the Kangaroos on the weekend, compiling a .625 batting average. Baker also finished the weekend batting .500, collecting a team-high six RBI through five games.
The Kangaroos head to Lawrence, Kan., on Monday to take on Missouri Valley Conference opponent Indiana State. The game, set for a 4 p.m. start, was originally slated as UMKC's home opener but was shifted to Arrocha Ballpark on the University of Kansas campus due to unplayable conditions at Cleveland Park.
