
Golden Eagles Drop Kangaroos, 3-0

Tulsa, Okla. - The UMKC volleyball team fell in three games to Oral Roberts on Friday night at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Kangaroos dropped the match by the scores of 16-30, 22-30 and 27-30, as the Golden Eagles completed the season sweep of UMKC.
ORU opened the match by scoring the first five points, and it proceeded to build its advantage to 10-4 and 14-5. The Kangaroos never really got anything going in the first game, as they finished with just nine kills and a .075 hitting percentage. ORU, meanwhile, finished with 21 kills to just two errors for a .463 hitting clip, as it claimed the game by the count of 30-16.
In the second game, the action was tight through the first 15 points, as ORU clung to a 9-6 lead. UMKC continued battling, as it got to within two points at 14-12 behind a Sarah Johnson kills, but the Golden Eagles then scored five of seven points to build their lead to five at 19-14. The Kangaroos wouldn't roll over and concede the game, as kills by Kelly Gettinger and Holly Schmidt brought the team to within a point (21-20), but ORU answered with seven of eight points to take a 28-21 lead before going on to the 30-22 win.
After the break, Oral Roberts got off to a 7-3 lead through the first 10 points, before UMKC battled back to tie the game at 12 all. Kills from Gettinger and Johnson then propelled the Kangaroos to the 16-12 lead, but ORU fought back to even things up at 19. The final 10 points of the game was an all out battle, as there were five ties with the final coming at 25 all. ORU then tallied back-to-back points to go up 27-25 before going on to the 30-27 win.
The Kangaroos finished the match with 34 kills and a .134 hitting percentage, while the Golden Eagles had 56 kills and a .281 clip. UMKC also finished with 32 assists, 53 digs and seven blocks.
Sophomore Jamie Hagerman and Johnson tied for the team high with eight kills apiece, while junior Danni Sperry had a team-best 17 assists. Junior Mandy Tipton finished with a match-high 23 digs, - her ninth match with 20 or more digs this season - as she moved into fifth place on the all-time digs chart in school history.
UMKC (5-22, 2-9) will return to action on Saturday night at Centenary.
