
Kangaroos Drop Road Match At Centenary

Shreveport, La. - The UMKC volleyball team dropped its first ever match to Centenary, 3-0, on Saturday night at the Gold Dome in Shreveport, La. The Kangaroos fell by the scores of 23-30, 23-30 and 22-30.
The Ladies started out the first game strong by jumping out to a 9-3 lead through the first 12 points. Centenary continued pressuring UMKC, as it built its lead to 10 points at 19-9 before a Mandy Tipton service ace and a Sarah Johnson kill helped bring the Kangaroos to within five points at 20-15. CC quickly built its advantage back to eight points before going on to the 30-23 win.
The fortunes were reversed to start the second game, as UMKC used kills by Jamie Hagerman, Lauren Starks and Johnson to jump out to an 11-4 advantage. The Ladies put together a run of their own to get to within three points at 15-12, but the Kangaroos used kills by Caitlin Koenig and Starks to build their lead back to six points at 18-12. Centenary, however, battled back to tie the game at 19, before taking a 25-19 lead. The Kangaroos got to within five points on a pair of occasions, but Centenary wouldn't let them get any closer, as it went on to the 30-23 win.
After the intermission, the Ladies built on their momentum by jumping out to the quick 10 point lead at 15-5. The team maintained its advantage as the score was 22-12 before UMKC showed some life. Holly Schmidt, Hagerman and Johnson helped the Kangaroos get to within four points at 25-21, but Centenary scored five of the next six points to win its first Summit League match of the season by the 30-22 count.
UMKC finished with 33 kills and a .024 hitting percentage, while CC had 44 kills and a .271 clip. The Kangaroos also had 30 assists, 42 digs and four blocks in the match.
Starks paced the team with 11 kills in the contest, while Schmidt and Johnson each added five kills. Danni Sperry had 15 assists for the team, while Tipton had a team-best 11 digs.
UMKC (5-23, 2-10) will close out the home portion of its schedule on Friday and Saturday against the Dakotas.
