Hytrek came to UMKC after serving for three years as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Indiana State University. While at ISU, Hytrek oversaw daily operations of a 10,000 square-foot strength and training facility. He was also responsible for directing and scheduling the strength and conditioning program for the 16-team Indiana State athletics program. His duties additionally included supervising two graduate assistant coaches, two interns, inventory and budgeting.
Prior to accepting the Indiana State position, Hytrek was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Kansas, where he was responsible for all phases of the strength and conditioning programs for the track and field teams. He also coordinated the design and implementation of the program for football, men's basketball, volleyball and softball. Hytrek earned a master of science degree in education with an emphasis in exercise physiology and biomechanics at Kansas in 1999. He also holds a bachelor of science degree in exercise science from the University of Nebraska in 1992.
Hytrek is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He and his wife, Ann, and daughter, Katelyn, reside in Kansas City, Mo.
