James Allan is in his sixth year as the Sports Information Director at UMKC. He is responsible for overseeing the promotion of the department's 16 Division I sports, which includes being the primary contact for the men's basketball, men's soccer, men's golf and men's tennis teams. He also oversees an Assistant Sports Information Director, a graduate assistant and student assistants.
During his time in Kansas City, Allan has successfully promoted nine student-athletes to ESPN The Magazine Academic all-America honors, as well as one finalist and one semifinalist for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Allan also played an integral part in the planning and creation of the inaugural UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame and continues to serve on the Hall of Fame selection committee.
In 2007, Allan oversaw the transition in the department's website from CBS College Sports to JumpTV. He was responsible for the site design and lay-out, and he serves as the point person for Roo Vision, the department's live audio and video streaming service. He also has also led the department's efforts in its use of social media outlets Twitter and Facebook, as he now holds the de facto title of Director of New Media.
Allan came to UMKC in July 2005 as the Assistant Sports Information Director. He served in the position for four months before being promoted to the director's position on Nov. 1.
A native of Hampton, Iowa, Allan spent the 2004-05 school year as an intern with the athletics media relations office at TCU. While with the Horned Frogs, he was responsible for covering the nationally-ranked women’s tennis program and the swimming and diving teams. He also assisted with the football and men's and women's basketball programs.
Prior to his move to TCU, Allan worked four years as a student assistant in the Iowa Sports Information Office. During his tenure with the Hawkeyes, Allan was the primary contact for baseball, women’s soccer, men’s golf, men’s swimming and diving and women’s track and field. He also worked closely with the nationally-ranked football, men's and women’s basketball and wrestling teams.
Allan has worked at a number NCAA events including the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championships, 2005 PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl, 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and the 2010 NCAA Women's Basketball Regional Final. He has also assisted in the planning and coordination of a number of league championships in the Big Ten, Conference USA and The Summit League.
Allan, who is an active member of CoSIDA and the United States Basketball Writers Association, earned his bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in May 2004. He and his wife, Mary Ann, were married on July 7, 2007, and they reside in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
