Bio
Janet Justus was hired in April 2008 as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Compliance. Justus, who joined the UMKC staff in August, previously held the title of Interim Assistant Athletics Director for Internal Operations.
“I am pleased that Janet has become part of the UMKC Athletics family,” said Hall at the time of her hiring. “She has a strong national reputation in a number of areas: rules compliance, life skills, gender equality and administration, to name a few. She will play a crucial role in the continuation of the comprehensive program-building process.”
Justus, a former senior staffer for the NCAA with 23 years of experience in sports law and higher education, came to UMKC after practicing law at Verrill Dana LLP, a law firm based in Portland, Maine. On July 1, 2008, she formed Janet Justus, LLC, a law and consulting firm focusing on issues in intercollegiate athletics and higher education. Shortly thereafter, Justus began working with the UMKC Athletics Department, focusing on various areas, including compliance, in the department.
During her eight years at Verrill Dana, Justus practiced and consulted in the areas of Title IX compliance, litigation, NCAA rules compliance and NCAA student-athlete eligibility appeals, contract negotiations, sexual-harassment education; athletics risk management and development of policies and procedures.
During her 15-year tenure on the NCAA staff, Justus oversaw the inaugural development and growth of critical areas for the NCAA membership, including the eligibility-appeals department, Title IX education, the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference, the growth and influence of the National Student-Athlete Advisory Committees and the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
Justus served in several key positions at the NCAA national office, including Director of Education Outreach (1994-99), Director/Assistant Director of Eligibility (1987-1994) and Enforcement Representative (1984-87). She also was the national spokesperson for the NCAA on Title IX and gender-equity issues and produced the NCAA “Achieving Gender-Equity Guide,” on these issues. Justus was the primary staff liaison to the NCAA Eligibility Committee, NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and she has been a frequent speaker nationwide for seminars and conferences focusing on Title IX.
Justus received the Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Kansas in 1998. In 1999, she was named the NACWAA National Administrator of the Year, and she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the United States Sports Academy. In 2000, Justus was named the WIN for KC/Greater Kansas City Sports Commission Mentor of the Year.
As a Kansas City community leader, she chairs the Chancellor's Advisory Board to the UMKC Women’s Center; is the former long-time chair of WIN for KC; is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission and recently was named to the KCUR FM Board of Directors.
A Kansas City native, Justus earned her juris doctorate at the University Of Kansas School Of Law in 1981. She graduated from Kansas with honors in 1978 with a bachelor of arts in sociology.
